National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

Better Teaching, Better Learning, Better Schools

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is recognized for their commitment to teaching excellence. National Board Certified Teachers are highly accomplished educators who meet high and rigorous standards.

Like board-certified doctors and accountants, teachers who achieve National Board Certification have met rigorous standards through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessment and peer review. NBPTS offers 25 certificates that cover a variety of subject areas and student developmental levels.

In a congressionally-mandated study, National Board Certification was recognized by the National Research Council as having a positive impact on student achievement, teacher retention, and professional growth.

More than 140,000 teachers nationwide have achieved National Board Certification. These teachers prepare America’s diverse student population with the skills it needs to compete in the 21st century workplace.

What Is National Board Certification?

National Board Certification is an advanced teaching credential. It complements, but does not replace, a state’s teacher license. It is valid for 5 years, and is subject to renewal via the Maintenance of Certification process.

National Board Certification is achieved upon successful completion of a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize effective and accomplished teachers who meet high standards based on what teachers should know and be able to do. National Board Certification is available nationwide for most preK–12 teachers.

As part of the certification process, candidates complete assessments that are reviewed by trained teachers in their certificate areas. These assessments include portfolio entries, video documentation and a content area exam.
